(A separate link to the video is posted on Isidore) As mentioned in class, the story of options and the development of the Black-Scholes formula is intertwined with the story of international financial markets and investment and global financial crisis. Although B-S was originally developed for pricing stock options, the formula that we have been using in class for currency options is virtually identical. Specifically, except for the Tr e − * term that discounts by the foreign interest rate, and of course the fact that the underlying asset is a foreign currency rather than a share of stock, the formulas are exactly the same. In addition to the development of the B-S formula, the video brings together many concepts that we have seen in class this semester, including (in no particular order): – Replicating portfolio and no-arbitrage pricing – Market efficiency vs. forecasting – Statistical methods for characterizing returns and measuring risk – Risk transfer role of derivatives and hedging – Derivatives trading and exchanges – International capital flows and investment – Currency crisis and contagion Besides these, the video also gives a great glimpse into the world of academic finance, the inner workings of financial markets and institutions, and the nature of financial crises. While you are watching, note the similarity between what got us into trouble back then and what got us into trouble today (e.g., excessive debt/leverage to fuel a property boom, underassessment of risk and/or overconfidence in our ability to deal with risk, government bailouts, etc.). 1. Consider software applications that you regularly use that have menu interfaces, whether they be PC- or mainframe-based applications. Evaluate these applications in terms of the menu design guidelines outlined in Table 11-1 of our textbook. 2. Consider the possible design of a registration system for a hotel aimed at front-desk hotel employees. Following the design specification items in Fig. 11-2, briefly describe the relevant users, tasks, and displays involved in such a system. 3. Imagine the possible design of a system used to register students at a university. Discuss the user, task, system, and environmental characteristics (see Table 10-10 of our textbook) that should be considered when designing the interface for such a system. 4. For the three common methods of system interaction –command language, menus, and objects– recall a software package that you have used recently and list what you liked and disliked about the package with regards to the interface. What were the strengths and weaknesses of each interaction method for this particular program? Which type of interaction do you prefer for which circumstances? Which type do you believe will become most prevalent? Why? 5. Briefly describe three or more different business tasks that are good candidates for form-based interaction within an information system. 6. Propose three or more specific settings where natural language interaction would be particularly useful and explain why. 7. Examine the systems for three or more software applications that you use. Evaluate each using the general guidelines provided in Table 12-11 of our textbook. 8. List four contributing factors that have acted to impede the design of high-quality interfaces and dialogues on Internet-based applications.

Use what you have learned about the time value of money to analyze each of the following decisions: Tom and Tricia are 22, newly married, and ready to embark on the journey of life. They both plan to retire 45 years from today. Because their budget seems tight right now, they had been thinking that they would wait at least 10 years and then start investing $1800 per year to prepare for retirement. Tricia just told Tom, though, that she had heard that they would actually have more money the day they retire if they put $1800 per year away for the next 10 years – and then simply let that money sit for the next 35 years without any additional payments – than they would have if they waited 10 years to start investing for retirement and then made yearly payments for 35 years (as they originally planned to do). How much money will Tom and Tricia have in 45 years if they do nothing for the next 10 years, then put $1800 per year away for the remaining 35 years? How much money will Tom and Tricia have in 10 years if they put $1800 per year away for the next 10 years? b2) How much will that amount you just computed grow to if it remains invested for the remaining 35 years, but without any additional yearly deposits being made? How much money will Tom and Tricia have in 45 years if they put $1800 per year away for each of the next 45 years? How much money will Tom and Tricia have in 45 years if they put away $150 at the end of each month for the next 45 years? ( Purchase the answer to view it

From our weekly chapter reading, digital preservation can be defined as the long-term, error-free storage of digital information, with means for retrieval and interpretation, for the entire time span the information is required to be retained. Though this assessment holds true to the authors, business organizations continue to face significant challenges in meeting their LTDP needs, especially those organizations whose primary mission is to preserve and provide access to permanent records. Looking at your identified industry for your paper, what considerations would have to be made in developing a long-term archival plan for a company within that industry?
